Otabek Altin is a figure skater from Kazakhstan in the series “Yuri!!! on Ice”. He is known by the nickname "Hero of Kazakhstan". Otabek is 18 years old and is relatively short for his age standing 5’6”. He has dark brown eyes and short undercut hair in black. Mostly seen in a stoic or moody expression, Otabek has his moments when he shows kindness.
Being an introverted person he likes to be alone, but he spends time with other skaters in Barcelona during Grand Prix Final. He also saves Yuri Plisetsky from his fans and congratulates Yuri Katsuki and Victor Nikiforov in their assumed engagement.
Otabek Altin and Yuri Plisetsky
Five years in the past, Otabek participated in a training camp run by Yakov Feltsman, coach of Victor and Yuri P. Altin could not keep up with the Russian skaters and so he was made to transfer to the class for novice where he first met Yuri Plisetsky.
Yuri Plisetsky had the unforgettable eyes of a soldier.
This was his first impression of Yuri and he felt that they have a lot in common. Otabek leaves the training camp and moves around to train. Years later he meets Yuri in the Ice Skating Rink.
They become friends properly this time after Altin saves him from ‘Yuri Angels’, his fan club. Otabek has the hobby of DJ-ing and as he goes into a club after GPF, Yuri tails him. Even though Altin does not allow Yuri because he is underage, he still follows Otabek inside.
In the club, impressed by his skill Yuri becomes interested in Otabek’s rock music DJ and requests his song to use for Yuri’s exhibition skate. Otabek agrees to this and assists Yuri in his exhibition performance.
Otabek Altin Based on Denis Ten
Denis Ten, a Kazakh skater and also a 2014 Olympic bronze medalist is the inspiration behind Otabek Altin’s design. Like Denis, Otabek is also seen carrying a fictional character Ted, like a teddy bear.
Altin’s DJ-ing hobby also resembles Denis’s since he was a musician in his free time. Denis Ten also posted a photo of Otabek Altin on his Instagram on the occasion of Kazakhstan’s Independence.
Otabek’s short program, ‘Samarkand Overture’, which he dedicated to his homeland, could also be a reference to the bronze medalist Denis Ten’s gala exhibition of 2014, “Warriors of Kazakhstan”.
