Kakegurui: Compulsive Gambler is one of the most famous psychological thriller anime.
The story of Kakegurui revolved around a private high school named the Hyakkaou Private Academy, one of Japan’s most prestigious schools where only the rich spoiled kids went.
Unlike other schools, Hyakkou Private Academy was quite different.
In other schools, the student's results were based on their academic and co-curricular activities results.
It was the opposite at Hyakkou Private Academy.
What Was The Political System Of Kakegurui?
The hierarchy was determined by gambling. Students were ranked by their monetary contributions to the student council.
Those who won, earned popularity, money, and fame whereas those who lost, fell into debt and became house pets known as ‘dogs’ and ‘kittens’.
The students of the Hyakkou Academy enjoyed the system instead of being against it.
Especially, students like Kirari Momobami and Midari Ikishima who straight away went for death bets.
They had no respect or regard for human life. They sought their fun and thrill by torturing other people.
The hierarchy was in the hands of the student council. There were many people who were a part of the student council holding different positions.
Even though most of them were undeserving but they were still a part of the council because of their strong political relations.
The student council was the foundation of the dirty politics that were followed in the school.
Kakegurui took many different directions.
The characters weren’t fighting or creating some sort of harem or chaos but, instead, the focus was on gambling, winning, drama, and the competitions.
But Kakegurui took a complete turn when Yumeko Jabami stepped into Hyakkou Private Academy.
Who Was Yumeko Jabami?
Yumeko Jabami had recently transferred to Hyakkou.
As soon as she stepped in, the tables turned and the system changed. She was Ryota Suzuki and Mary Saotome’s classmate and friend.
New to the school and completely unaware of the school’s twisted hierarchy, Yumeko was shown around the school by Ryota.
She instantly became very popular.
Unrestrained by rules or logic, Yumeko threatened to destroy the twisted hierarchy of the school as she continued to seek thrill in her life.
As soon as she became aware of the fact that the whole system was disrupted because of Yumeko, the student council head Kirari Momobami was hell-bent on destroying her.
How Was Yumeko Different From The Other Characters In Kakegurui?
Yumeko Jabami: A Pro Player
Yumeko was first challenged by Mary Saotome to a gambling match.
It was very clear from the beginning that Mary’s strategy was not fair to Yumeko as she was cheating. Mary rigged the game in her favor.
Yumeko revealed she noticed her strategy from the start and as she knew her strategy, she won the match leaving Mary with a debt of 8.8 million yen.
Another scene where Yumeko caught her opponent’s strategy was when Itsuki challenged her to a Double Concentration match where she caught her strategy and turned the game upside down.
She had a very sharp mind when it came to catching her opponent off guard. She was a master in this skill.
One of the very first alliances formed was the one between Yumeko and Ryota.
Later when she was approached by Jun Kiwatari and his friends and asked her to strip, Midari Ikishima came to her rescue.
Apart from this, Yumeko through the game for housepets became close to Mary as they together fooled Nanami and Jun.
Mary even played and staked her entire money just to save Yumeko from the poison given to her by Miyo and Miri.
Throughout the show, we see a number of positive alliances and pure friendships being formed.
How Was Yumeko Jabami Related To The Momobami Clan?
It was very much clear from Yumeko’s surname ‘Jabami’ that she was a part of this conglomerate branch of families.
Her surname ended with the suffix ‘bami’ which made her a member of this diverse clan.
Yumeko was the perfect threat for Kirari. As soon as she stepped into the Hyakkou Private Academy, she changed the estranged rules.
Since there wasn’t much screen time where Yumeko’s past life or her family were discussed, there wasn’t much that could be said or predicted about her family.
Yumeko Jabami And The Game Of Fate
After she was introduced to the show, the competition level increased exponentially. Everyone was jealous of her capabilities.
Those who used to win through cheap means now couldn’t since Yumeko had the eyes of a fox. She could catch anyone using foul play and turn the odds in her favour.
For everyone, She became the only person they wanted to defeat but it was an impossible task too for some who don’t know how to play well without cheating.
In the show, we observe that Yumeko, in all, was a super friendly character until she saw someone cheating.
Though everyone had the desire to defeat her, they were also strangely attracted to her bubbly personality which made her a charismatic person.
She was strong-willed. Even when she caught others cheating, she didn’t reveal it until the end of the match.
Though this put her at a disadvantage, she still managed to turn the game in her favour through her magnificent play.
A gambling addict, She believed that one can feel the thrill of life only when you take risks.
For her, it was risking everything just for a win.
She wanted her friends and classmates to experience the same rush and excitement she felt when she gambled freely.
Everyone who challenged her or was challenged by Yumeko was caught cheating.
Inevitably, everyone was shamed into opting for fair means of play as they knew they would get caught cheating and then be shamed for their loss.
She knew how to catch her opponent off guard and catch them red-handed.
