What Is The Kdrama Hwarang About?
Jiso, the queen, was ruling the kingdom of Silla Regent since King Beopheung died, keeping her son Sam Maek-Jong, who was the only heir of King Beopheung hidden outside of the capital Seorabeol and safe from enemies and assassins. As Sam Maek-Jong comes of age, nobles, officials, citizens and even Sam Maek-Jong himself grows impatient for her to cede power. However, the powerful nobles who were hell bent on taking away the power from Queen Jiso try to find the real King. In fear of losing her throne, Jiso took extreme steps and formed 'The Poet Warriors' known as Hwarangs.
Hwarang consisted of young boys of the officials themselves, who were appointed in to protect the king. On the other hand, two friends named, Mak-moon and Dog Bird lived in the village outside the capital. Both of them were orphans but Mak-moon hoped of finding his parents as he knew his father and sister lived in the capital. In order to find Mak-moon’s parents, both of them entered the capital illegally but soon afterwards, Mak-Moon is killed by the officials of the Queen. In order to take the revenge of his friend’s death, Dog Bird stayed in the capital and fell in love with Mak-Moon’s sister. As the series moved forward, Dog Bird found the answer to his identity he was unaware of.
What was Dog Bird aka Seon Woo’s Real Identity?
It is obvious that it wouldn’t be a K drama without a little twist in the story. One of the many reasons why Hwarang became one of the most popular dramas of 2017 was the storyline. When it comes to Dog-bird, he accidentally got roped up into becoming Seon-woo, the real identity of his friend Mak Moon. After Mak Moon was killed by the officials he wanted to avenge his death. Accepting his identity and living with it was the only way he could take his revenge.
When Mak Moon was killed, Seon-woo tried his best to save him. In the process, he was badly injured but was saved by Mak-Moon’s father Master Kim Ahnji. Even though, he was able to find his father, it was too late.
It was Master Ahnji’s idea that he should live like Seon-woo if he wanted to punish the people who killed his best friend. Ahnji helped Dog Bird to stay alive in the capital after disguising him as his son. But what made it even more interesting is Dog’s Bird’s real identity. He was taken in by an old man who lived in a village outside the capital right after he was born. But the moment Dog Bird found out his real identity he was shocked to the core.
Not a peasant or 'Half Breed'( half true bone, half peasant), Dog Bird was actually a sacred bone of royal descent, King Jinhueng. King Jinhueng was Queen Jiso’s real brother. Dog Bird’s biological mother was a Wonhwa and was killed by the queen itself in order to save the throne for his son when his mother was expecting Dog Bird. Even though Dog Bird’s mother died, King Jinheung was able to save his son. In order to protect him in the future, he sent him to the village outside the capital without any identity of him as the sacred bone.
Hwarang automatically became one of the best K dramas of all time. The storyline, cast, location, everything about this drama just fit so well. All in all, Hwarang is one of the shows one should check out, it’ll be worth your time.
V's (from BTS) Role in Hwarang
This drama also marks V's (from BTS) debut in acting. V (aka Kim Taehyung) played the role of ‘Suk Han-sung’, who was the youngest Hwarang of the lot. He was a bright and innocent boy who carried a heavy burden as the last jin-gol of his clan, Wolseong. V opened about his experience as a debut actor following the end of filming for his character in the show. In the Episode 18 of Hwarang, Seok Han-Sung (V), died while trying to protect Sun-Woo from the poisoned blade of his elder half-brother Seok Dan-Sae, who was asked to kill Sun-Woo.
Back when it was announced that V would be filming a drama, both fans and non-fans were concerned that people would criticize him for his lack of experience when it came to acting. At the press conference for Hwarang, the producer Yoon Jung-shik confessed that he casted V because he fell in love with his cheerful personality at first sight. V’s personality attracted every actor’s attention on the set. He was the perfect Suk Han-Sung.
