Violet Evergarden , the first anime series I decided to watch. What made me want to see it? Well, it was like the top recommendation by some anime fans, but after hearing the name of the series and how dreamy it sounded, how could I not? So far i’ve only watched the first two episodes but I haven’t been disappointed one bit, this anime series seems to be just as dreamy as it sounds. So without wasting your time , lets see what happened in Violet Evergarden Episode 1 .
Episode 1 Impression
It starts with a bit of a flashback, where this beautiful young girl and a tall lean boy are walking through the market and the girl stops right outside a shop. She takes a look at this emerald green crystal and talks about how it makes her feel something, a feeling she doesn’t quite know how to put in words.
This leads into what looks like a nursing room with the same girl, in a bed who seems to be she’s recovering from injuries. Soon enough we see a young man walk in who introduces himself as Lt Hodgins. He tells the girl, who is known as Violet, how she was in a war that lasted four years. Now that she’s better he’s there to take her to live elsewhere. Violet seems to have questions, more like concerns about her senior, Major Gilbert, who was with her during the war.
They say Violet’s like a weapon, a tool without a heart and it appears as though up until now, Major Gilbert gave her orders which she fulfilled as her duty towards the army. But it’s slightly unknown so far, about what happened to the Major during the war.
The Lt tells Violet that from now she was going to follow his orders which was something that Major Gilbert requested. And so, they set out to visit the Evergarden house, where the Major wished for Violet to stay, with his trusted relatives.
Although he seemed to have wanted her to stay there until she turns 18, Violet begins to think that she was being asked to live in this mansion, away from Major Gilbert. She starts believing that losing both her arms in the war meant that she’s had no value anymore.
On hearing this, Lt, who has quit the Army and now runs a company decides to take her to his workstation. He introduces her to the world outside of the Army, and lets her know she is useful and could work there. And that's where Violet seems to find her new beginning. A beginning that is starting to carve out a path for her.
This 24 minute episode of the Violet Evergarden made me feel all kinds of feelings. One that started with confusion, but very beautifully moved towards compassion and hope.
