Though he can be a bit too much with his rigidity, his popularity only keeps increasing.
Tenya Iida is an extremely strong aspiring hero, almost on the same level as a few pros.
He is a responsible class representative and also a good friend of Deku and Ochako. Here are a few unknown facts about Tenya Iida.
1. He Has Red Eyes in the Manga
Tenya Iida's character design is certainly unique. Unlike the rest of his classmates, you can tell at a glance that he is studious and has a stern personality.
Though he can be comical sometimes, he remains uptight most of the time.
One interesting fact we don't know about him is that Kouhei Horikoshi designed his character to have red eyes.
But for some reason, the animation studio believed blue eyes would suit him best.
We believe it was the right call as blue eyes fit more to his overall character.
2. The Inspiration Behind His Hero Name
We know that Tenya adopted the hero name Ingenium to honor his brother.
It was moving to see his admiration for his older brother to the level that he would embrace the integrity of the latter's name since he couldn't carry it on anymore.
However, the inspiration behind this hero name is actually the Ingenium Engine Family.
It is a range of modular engines produced by Jaguar and Land Rover, a fitting name for a hero with a quirk called "Engine".
3. The Meaning of His Name
One of the interesting things about My Hero Academia is that Horikoshi always names his characters as per their appearances, personalities, or quirks.
Tenya Iida is no different. The name "Tenya Iida" is inspired by the word "Idaten".
It is the Japanese name for a Mahayana defender of Buddhist shrines "Skanda".
According to mythology, Idaten is a very fast runner and symbolizes those who can run fast. Japanese exclaim using the expression "ya".
So, combining Idaten with ya would make the word "Idaten-ya" or "Iida Tenya".
4. His Hero Costume is Designed to Reduce Wind Resistance
Tenya Iida wears the same hero costume his family has been wearing for generations.
The engine quirk is a common trait in the Iida family and Tenya is no different. His quirk is just as strong as his predecessors.
The hero costume is the trademark of the Iida family.
It looks like a heavy robotic suit with engine exhausts protruding from the back or elbows to compliment the quirk on the user's calves.
However, contrary to its appearance, the costume is incredibly lightweight so the user's speed would not be comprised.
The whole body and even the helmet are designed to reduce wind resistance so the user can run at his/her full speed without any hindrances.
5. He is Faster than Gran Torino
Gran Torino is known as one of the fastest pro heroes in MHA.
In fact, his power is all because of his incredible speed. Despite being low-key, Gran Torino is a very respectable veteran and he is also All Might's mentor.
All Might once claim that Gran Torino can move faster than the eye can see.
However, such a powerful character is already left in the dust by an aspiring hero of class 1-A.
After the painful upgrade Tenya Iida had to go through to become stronger, he has now surpassed many fast pros including Gran Torino.
In season 5, during the matches between class 1-A and 1-B, we can see that his efforts were not in vain.
