He is one of the best fighters in U.A. This fact is proven since he is the second runner-up of U.A. sports festival. Tokoyami has the most intense personality in his class. Although he is good friends with his classmates, there's this dark vibe around him that makes him stand out more.
Despite his strange demeanor, he is an extremely caring person who would lose control if someone hurts his friends. Regardless, he is an extremely popular MHA character with lots of hidden secrets. Here, we will unveil 5 unknown facts about Fumikage Tokoyami.
1. The Meaning Behind his Name
Kouhei Horikoshi, the author, and illustrator of MHA manga, always name his characters according to their personalities, appearances, or powers. We are familiar with the word 'Yami' as there are many references to this word in anime. Yami means darkness and combining this word with 'Toko' makes it 'eternal or everlasting darkness'.
His first name is also a combination of two words. The 'Fumi' in his name means 'step' and 'Kage' means 'shadow'. His name defines a boy stepping through shadows in combat. The shadow here means his quirk 'Dark Shadow'.
2. He Loves Apple
Tokoyami liking apple isn't something that should be unusual. But there is a reason Horikoshi included this in his personality trait. Apple has lots of religious significances in Christianity. It is the forbidden fruit in the Book of Genesis due to the popular Christian tradition holds in the story of Adam and Eve.
Even Death Note picked up on this where they showed Ryuk and other Shinigami loved eating apples. According to Christian mythology, the God of Death loves apples. Fumikage's love for dimly lit places and apples was mentioned in one of his character profiles in the manga.
3. His References to Religions in his Attack Moves
Loving apples aren't the only reference to religious things mentioned about him. Even his attack names are somewhat related to them. His move 'Black Fallen Angel' is a direct reference to Christianity. Another move named 'Sabbath' has religious significance to the Jewish people.
It has many meanings, such as the day of the midnight meeting held by witches. However, according to biblical tradition, Sabbath means to rest. It commemorates the original seventh day of the year which God rested after completing the creation.
His other move 'Ragnarok' has symbolism in Greek mythology. It means the final destruction of the world in the conflict between the Aesir and the powers of Hel led by Loki. Marvel fans are familiar with the term 'Ragnarok'. It was the subtitle of Thor's second movie. We can see the similarities since the marvel superhero Thor is a religious reference to Greek mythology.
4. His Cape Supports his Quirk
MHA fans know by now that a hero's costume isn't only for show. They are designed to support an individual's quirk and enhance their powers. Fumikage is no exception to this. Horikoshi smartly designed his character costume which matches his personality as well.
At first glance, it looks like his attire is only for the sake of his dark personality. However, the truth is that functions as a medium to enhance dark shadow's powers. Since the dark shadow is covered by Fumikage's black cape, he gets enough darkness to have explosive attack power.
5. His Grandfather's Influence on his Personality
We all know how much Tokoyami loves dark places and religious stuff. He even decorated his room like that, for which his classmates made fun of him. However, there is a reason for his obsession with dark things. There isn't much mention of Tokoyami's family or past in the anime.
However, he does have parents and a grandfather. Fumikage grew up listening to the horror stories his grandfather used to tell him when he was a kid. He became fascinated with them and developed such a personality along the way. His hero name, attacks names, and everything related to him is somewhat related to religions from all around the world.
