The real story about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and their relationship with the rest of the British royal family, has rarely been their story in their own words. Netflix’s six-part documentary series Harry & Meghan explores the lives of the Sussexes.

Watch It or Skip It?

The couple attended a WHO meeting happily waving at the audience.

First of all, The Opening Shot clearly says “This is a first-hand account of Harry & Meghan’s story, told with never before seen personal archives. All interviews were completed by August 2022. Members of the Royal Family declined to comment on the content within this series.” So basically, In just a few sentences, the audience knows that the family has nothing to do with everything that will be shown in the documentary. Everything shown further is just the Point of View of the Sussexes and there is not a single proof other than their own and their friends' testimonies.

The first three episodes of the series were released on 8 December and the next three were released a week later, on 15 December. The show kicks off by the introduction of the main characters and how they were before they even knew each other.

Doria Ragland, Meghan's mother, played a major role in the series. She discussed her daughter’s upbringing and relationship with her divorced father, Thomas Markle. Markle’s family and friends have heavily criticized the Royal Family.

Various other testimonies came from Abigail Spencer, Serena Williams, Tyler Perry, David Olusoga, Silver Tree and others. These people knew the Sussexes up close and personally and hence were able to describe their condition more explicitly.

Episode 1 to 3 recounts the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Atlantic romance. They tell about their long-distance courtship and how Prince Harry ultimately proposed. In the three episodes, Harry talks about how his family was firstly welcoming of Meghan Markle and how they never tried to control Harry's personal life.

Harry was very close to his brother William. According to Harry, he and his brother saw the insides of his father's office and they decided that when they grow up, they won't behave like this with each other and they won't let their royal duties come in between their bond. This quickly changed after Harry's wedding.

Meghan recollects what went down between her and her father, Thomas Markle. Thomas, along with Meghan's estranged half sister Samantha, gave cryptic statements to the media about Meghan. They took the UK media's money to get published in the Mail and other papers. Meghan's father didn't attend the wedding and cut all his ties with Meghan just days before the wedding, according to Meghan.

Volume 2, which was released a week later explored the darker side of the royal family. The couple, especially Meghan, was getting tortured by the media. The royal family became spectators and no one took their stand. The couple also said that whenever any story of the royal family had to be published, the offices used to swap it with any one of Meghan's past stories. This was used as a tactic to keep the family safe from the media and Meghan was used as a 'bait' to lure media away.

The Duchess confessing what she went through when she was a part of the royal family.

Harry discusses his mother’s death and how he was not allowed to grieve publicly, and the subsequent negative press he received as a teen, with his drug usage among other things. And now, as an adult, it’s clear from all he said that he knows he was born into a "flawed system".

The tabloids condemned Meghan for what Kate was praised for (wearing an off shoulder dress or eating Avocados). The show takes us step by step through how the media portrayed a major role in the couple's estranged relationship with the family and how racism was promoted.

The Contrasting views of press for Kate and Meghan regarding the same topic- Eating Avocados.

Meghan and Harry’s story isn’t one that can really provide much in terms of new information. Most of the elements were known previously, be it Meghan's lawsuit against the Daily Mail, or the meeting held where, according to Harry, William shouted at him. But the series is still fun to watch because of the unimaginable twists, be it the role of the Palace Officials leaking information or be it the media's racist comments.

The Royal Family of the UK.

In my view, Harry & Meghan feels like a honest story of what it’s like behind palace doors. Agreeing to the fact that the show displayed the couple in too much positivity, but Harry and Meghan looked great as a couple. They were brave enough to call out monarchy and ratted out their own family agendas which definitely takes a lot of courage. It offers context for why we’ve been conditioned to think the way we do about the royals, and seeks to shatter all the myths regarding them.

The couple’s sweet mobile recordings of their baby Archie are what really make you grin. An obvious illustration would be the sight of Archie next to Diana’s picture frame. So to conclude, Harry and Meghan definitely gave us some insights of what went down between the couple and the family.

It totally deserves a one time watch. No matter your feelings about any of the royals, by the time the series shows us this happy couple and their two young children playing in the garden of their new home, you can’t help but feel happy for the couple finally being in a good place. And finally "Love won" for them.
