In Haikyuu season 1 episode 18, Karasuno managed to win their first set but when the second set heated up, the team turned to Asahi. In Haikyuu season 1 episode 19, Karasuno developed a strategy to beat Aoba Johsai, focusing on Oikawa. Oikawa surprised them with new tricks, but Kageyama had one-up their own sleeve.
As Karasuno won the second round of the match which was against the ‘Iron Wall’ team Date Tech, everyone was happy and motivated for the upcoming matches. It was everyone’s teamwork and determination which lead them to win the match.
After the match between Karasuno and Date Tech was over, they became a part of the audience to see the remaining matches. The next match’s opponent was Aoba Johsai. Aoba Johsai was one of the top four teams in the Miyagi Prefecture.
Toru Oikawa was the captain of the team. Most of the players of Johsai were powerful enough to become aces. Aoba Johsai’s notable players were Oikawa, Iwaizumi, and Kyotani.
The team consisted of amazing setters and decoys. It had only lost to The Shiratorizawa’s, another powerful volleyball team. Oikawa was Kageyama’s senior. He had learned his major volleyball moves from him. So, when Karasuno won their first practice match which was against Aoba Johsai, Oikawa promised to take revenge.
He said that he would wipe Kageyama, his young protégé of his. The Karasuno practiced hard to play against Aoba Johsai. Ukai even asked for the video recording of the match that they played earlier that day just to have a deeper look at their techniques.
But little did he know that Oikawa had some similar things going on. Oikawa being the smart person he was, did the same. He asked for Karasuno and Date Tech’s match’s video recording.
Ukai even filled the team with some words of upliftment. Ukai believed that if the team could start from scratch and win against a team like Date Tech, they could win against Aoba Johsai too. But when they played against Date Tech, they showed all of their hidden attacks and strategies. So catching Aoba Johsai off guard was difficult yet possible if they tried.
The next day, as the first whistle of the match, was heard both the teams were busy with their warm-ups. As the second whistle was heard, the lineup started. Kageyama looked more nervous than he usually was. As this was his first official match against his senior Oikawa, he wanted to prove him wrong.
Before the match started, Oikawa threatened Kageyama that today he would do what he promised and wipe Kageyama off the court. But Hinata being himself could not stand the fact that Oikawa was disrespecting Kageyama so he took a stand against him.
During the match, Oikawa wasn’t letting Karasuno score points. He was sharp with his techniques. He was almost shooting the dump shot while tossing the ball. But Kageyama had the planning of his own. When he saw Oikawa, again and again, going for the dump shot, he decided to use the same strategy to prove himself.
Unaware of Kageyama’s plan, everybody thought he was going for a Pipe attack but when Hinata and Tanaka came to spike the ball, Kageyama already dumped the ball to another side of the court. That became the highlight of the match.
