Fate Stay Night Visual Novel story revolves around Shirou Emiya, a hardworking and honest teenager who unwillingly enters a to-the-death tournament called the Fifth Holy Grail War, where combatants fight with magic and Heroes from throughout history for a chance to have their wishes Orphaned and the sole survivor of a massive fire in Fuyuki City as a child, Shirou was taken in by a retired mage named Kiritsugu Emiya, who would die years later. One evening, after seeing two devastatingly powerful beings trading blows at his school with swords and spears, he is attacked, as witnesses to the Holy Grail War are generally supposed to be eliminated. Chased to his home by the spear-wielding warrior Lancer, and barely able to avoid his attacks, Shirou is about to be killed when he is saved by Saber.

Saber, the personification of a renowned figure in history (Artirua Pentagonin her case) was created to aid participants in the War. In her supposedly accidental summoning and the appearance of the marks on Shirou’s hand, his entry as a Master into the Holy Grail War is formalized.

Fate Stay Night Visual Novel epilogue (from Rin’s point of view) we see that Shirou lives with Sakura and Rider now. Shirou and Sakura’s relationship has given them the self worth they were lacking before and they pretty much live happily ever after (till battle moon wars lol)

All three endings read in order can be seen as Shirou meta-textually progressing thorough a kind of maturation. He first falls in love with a cool, magical, super king and ends up more committed to selfless heroism then ever. In the second Shirou is confronted with the personal consequences of his philosophy and while he finds it shaking he remains true to his ideals despite the problems that were revealed to him. In the final third Shirou finally finds someone for whom he will throw away all of his beliefs, this causes him tremendous pain but he saves Sakura and it turns out that sacrificing his ideals did not strip him of the kindness he had as a person.
