What’s the one thing that makes us so much happiness and it doesn’t have to make one an otaku to watch it. Anime Movies are classic and even if you don’t watch anime series, watching movies might really intrigue you!
Thanks to different streaming sites like Netflix, watching anime movies can be fun and exciting. However, there are movies you might haven’t discovered yet, so here’s a list of some of the old and new, underrated and overrated movies just to lighten you up!

Bokura no Nanokakan Sensou
The 2019 anime movie 7 Day War was a surprise catch. Things went wrong when an introverted high school student, Mamoru Suzuhara arranges a getaway camp for his secret crush. Unknown of the future consequences others join the camp but things don’t go as planned, do they? Things became troublesome when Aya’s dad wants to drag back his daughter because of political reasons. Can the party hold out for 7 days? What dirty secrets will get exposed?
Summer Ghost
The 2021 Supernatural anime movie Summer Ghost might confuse you a bit, but it gets better for sure. Three strangers search for a spirit to answer their questions but have ulterior motives. Lighting the fireworks allows the kids to meet the “Summer Ghost”, the urban legend. Can the summer ghost receive her freedom? Why are the kids obsessed with urban legend? Watch the movie to find out.
Totsukuni no Shoujo
Technically, it’s not a movie, but an 80 mins long 2022 OVA worth mentioning in the list. The Girl From the Other Side, shows the story of two characters Sensei and Shiva who meet under extraordinary circumstances. Shiva is a lost child who meets sensei. They grow attached to each other, but a tragedy might await the duo. Can Sensei reverse Shiva’s fate? Watch Totsukuni no Shoujo to watch the beautiful story unfold.
Liz to Ao Tori
The musical story is a spin-off Hibike! Euphonium series. The movie showed a parallel between a fairy tale story and a musical piece. Liz no Ao Tori is a phenomenal story of Mizore and Nozomi and what music and friendship mean for them. The movie had many beautiful and emotional moments.
Hal
This was a very surprising movie and highly recommended. The ending will leave you shooketh for sure. Due to an accident, Kurumi’s boyfriend passed. What’s even worse, is that before the accident, they parted on bad terms. It’s sad as Kurumi can’t get over him and but her grandfather builds her a robot who’s a lookalike of her ex-boyfriend. How will Kurumi deal with Hal and what’s the ending twist? Can love transcend all boundaries?
Taifuu no Noruda
It’s a very short anime movie with a duration of 26 mins. Without further spoiling, Taifuu no Noruda shows the story of three children and how they deal with a supernatural typhoon in Okinawa. Can the typhoon be stopped and what lies at the end of a broken friendship?
Kimi to, Nami ni Noretara
The supernatural romance Ride your wave is one of the movies that will surprise you. Things become bizarre when Hinako’s apartment caught fire causing a casualty. Someone she liked passed away but he’s not dead. How will Minato remain connected with Hinako? Watch Kimi to, Nami ni Noretara to find out the romantic story and calm your senses with the beautiful ocean waves.
Made in Abyss Movie (Part 1,2,3)
The visually appealing movie which might seem childlike and adorable is actually much more gruesome. Made in Abyss is a fantasy/sci-fi movie showing the story of Reg and Riko on a journey of self-discovery and meeting new people. Reg doesn't know where he came from and Riko is searching for her mother. There are many secrets that slowly unfold, but how will Reg and Riko manage in Abyss?
Sakasama no Patema
This is a personal favorite and highly recommended. The 2013 movie, Patema Inverted shows two different worlds set in a fictional world. What you see isn’t everything and what looks simple can actually be inverted. A discovery of secrets, friendship, passion, and courage. Watch Sakasama no Patema if you enjoy sci-fi and adventure. Patema and Age will fight against the oppressors and overcome their difference to find a way to coexist.
Prashakhi
Natsume Yuujinchou Movie (2021)
Still not over Natsume’s Book of Friends? Well, 2021 was lucky as fans get to watch the second movie Natsume Yuujinchou: Ishi Okoshi to Ayashiki Raihousha. The movies are not directly connected with the series but watching the series is an additional bonus. Join Natsume and Nyanko sensei in their adventure as they help other ayakashis. There are two different stories woven into the movie and both are quite appealing. Happy watching!
Violet Evergarden The Movie
The list would be incomplete without the mention of Violet Evergarden The Movie. The movie finally gave us some closure along with Violet Evergarden in her search for one true love. Without spoiling much, just watch Violet Evergarden The Movie now streaming on Netflix.
