Demon Slayer was probably the biggest anime of 2019. The story follows Kamado Tanjiro, a teenager who becomes a demon slayer after losing his family to a demon.
He is also looking for a cure for his sister who was cursed by the same demon. The show gained massive popularity owing to its fantastic animation and dynamic characters.
The protagonist Kamado Tanjiro is somewhat unique amongst shonen heroes. He is defined by his extreme empathy towards everyone, even demons. On his quest for finding a cure for his sister whom he travels with, Tanjiro meets all sorts of people and enemies. Fellow demon slayers Zenitsu and Inosuke become his companions.
While the story is mostly focused on exploring human relationships with demons and human nature, it still makes some time for romantic love. Zenitsu’s infatuation with Nezuko is fairly obvious to the viewers.
Some of the funniest moments of the show come from interactions between a lovestruck Zenistsu and a fairly oblivious Nezuko trying to avoid him. What about our protagonist Tanjiro though? The first season of the show has given us some hints regarding his love life. Let’s discuss his love interest, Kanao Tsuyuri.
Kanao Tsuyuri (Anime)
Kanao and Tanjiro did not interact when they first met at the Final Selection. She remained aloof and quiet at the end of the ceremony. Later in the series, they met again on Natagumo Mountain.
Kanao engaged in a physical altercation with Tanjiro as he attempted to protect his sister from being killed, and Tanjiro was knocked out cold by Kanao.
After certain events, Tanjiro was taken to the Butterfly Mansion for treatment and met Kanao there. He immediately recognized her as one of the Final Selection survivors but failed to recognize her as his assailant.
Later on, when they started training, Tanjiro found it difficult to outperform Kanao in all of the tasks due to her superior abilities.
However, he eventually adapted and defeated her. During one of the games, Tanjiro is tasked with splashing the opponent with a strong-smelling tea, but instead of dumping it on Kanao, he places the cup on her head to avoid splashing her. Yes, our boy is kind to a fault even in the face of playful competition.
Kanao had difficulty opening up to anyone due to her traumatic past. Before bidding her farewell, in a tender moment, Tanjiro encouraged her to open up more and be optimistic. This catalyzed a change in Kanao and she began a journey to self-discovery.
Kanao Tsuyuri (Manga)
Needless to say, this is a spoiler full zone, proceed at your own discretion. As the story progresses further Kanao begins to show more openness and decisiveness.
Later in the story, Kanao is the only conscious Demon Slayer left during the battle against Muzan Kibutsuji, and she tries to will herself to continue fighting.
Tanjiro temporarily immobilizes Muzan as he prepares to deliver the final blow, allowing him to carry Kanao to safety. Kanao sobs as she repeatedly calls out his name, realizing he has awakened, and he responds by apologizing for being late.
When Tanjiro turned into a demon, Kanao tried to save him putting her own life at risk. She cries and is visibly relieved to see Tanjiro safely return to his human form.
When he successfully returns to his human form, the two exchange tearful smiles as they lie across from each other. Tanjiro and Kanao would eventually marry and have a family, with two great-grandchildren named Kanata Kamado and Sumihiko Kamado.
