Jean Kristein is a fictional character of the anime Attack On Titan. The plot of Attack on Titan centers on a civilization inside three walls, the last location where humans still live.
Over one hundred years ago, humanity was driven to the brink of extinction after the emergence of humanoid giants called Titans, who attack and eat humans on sight.
The last remnants of humanity retreated behind three concentric walls and enjoyed nearly a century of peace.
To combat Titans, the country's military employs Vertical Maneuvering Equipment, a set of waist-mounted grappling hooks and gas-powered propulsion enabling immense mobility in three dimensions.

Jean Kirstein is a graduate of the 104th Training Corps, among whom he ranked 6th best.
Jean hails from Wall Rose's Trost District, and joined the military with hopes of obtaining a peaceful life as part of the Military Police Brigade, but would later find himself joining the Survey Corps.
Currently, he serves as a commanding officer in the Survey Corps, leading a squad during the Raid on Liberio. Jean has a blunt personality.
He holds no restraint when it comes to speaking his mind, even when he knows it would not be wise to do so or when it could spark conflict.
Jean is also pragmatic: he has a strong aversion to exposing himself to dangerous situations, and has openly admitted his desire to join the Military Police is due to wanting an easy and safe life.

Pieck and Jean first met each other in the Return to Shiganshina arc where Pieck was helping Zeke, Reiner & Bertolt fight the scouts.
In that mission, Jean saved Hange from being eaten by Pieck.
Pieck and Jean then shared a tense look before she ran away from the scene. After that, they don't meet again until the raid on Liberio.
When Jean saw the Cart Titan, he recognized that it was Pieck and he began to fight her.
Before fighting her, he sarcastically told her that he "Didn't get to thank you for last time" and then he shot her with a thunder spear, leaving her incapacitated in her titan form.
Jean then attempted to finish her off, but then Falco stood in the way which made Jean hesitant to attack him. Jean & Pieck made eye contact and then he shot the thunder spear.
He missed due to the steam but then he noticed Pieck in her human form for the first time.
The other scouts tried to finish off Pieck but Jean told them to retreat because the Marleyans were defending her.
Jean and Pieck met again when Hange formed an alliance with the Warriors to stop Eren.
Pieck then took Jean, Yelena, and Onyankopon from Floch as he tried to exterminate Yelena and Onyankopon.
Jean then comes out drenched in the Cart Titan's saliva and it gets in his mouth too; Jean is shown to be grossed out.
After that, they tried to seize the flying boat but they had to fight the Yeagerists in order to get it.
Falco transformed into his titan to provide support for Reiner and Annie but he lost control shortly after.
Falco began to rampage and he was about to attack Jean but Pieck stepped in the way and protected Jean and the scouts.
Later on, Jean sets off to detonate the bomb but he encounters an impaled Pieck.
The reanimated Warhammer Titan gets distracted by Jean which gives Pieck enough time to transform again and kill the Warhammer Titan.
After that, Jean was going to be killed by a titan but Pieck saved him.
A titan attacked Pieck from behind and Jean, thinking she was going to get killed, yelled at her to stay away so she wouldn't get attacked.
Pieck then shot out of her titan form leaving Jean confused and worried.
As she transformed into a titan again, she explained to Jean that she could spawn the Cart Titan many times and that he didn't need to worry about her.
Pieck's strength and determination seemed to impress Jean. Listening to Pieck, Jean left her so he could detonate the bomb.
In Chapter 137, Jean set off to activate the bomb but before heading Eren's way he looks back to check on Pieck, and he realizes that she's in trouble.
He then rushed to save her. Pieck tells him that she can fight once she heals her arm, but Jean told her that she's reached her limit and continues to keep her safe.
He carries her with one arm as they look for Reiner. Jean holds Pieck and protects her as she sees a resurrected Porco and begins to cry.
When Jean realizes Pieck and Reiner are safe, he goes on to blow Eren up.
After Jean blows Eren up, Pieck and Jean have a conversation about Reiner staying behind. Consequently, Jean picks up Pieck and they go to Falco together.
In the final chapter Pieck and Jean and the others are now ambassadors for Marley, on their way to Paradis on the boat, Jean is seen fixing his hair, and Pieck jokes and asks him about who he is trying to impress, Jean responds he's trying to look good for girls that read history books.
