AnoHana Last Episode: Did Menma Got A Happy Goodbye?

In The flower blooming that summer, Meiko “Menma” Honmaa half-Russian and half-Japanese girl who died in an accident appears in front of her friend Jinta “Jintan” Yadomi after five years. Jintan is shocked to his very core when he sees Menma one summer day while playing video games. Jintan had been carrying the guilt of her death for all these years. Even dead she was just as lively and excited as always.

In The flower blooming that summer, Jintan and the other members of Super Peace Busters believed that Menma was unable to pass on because their feelings were self-centred. They were being selfish and only thinking about what they wanted instead of what Menma wanted.

Tsuruko confesses that she conspired against Menma the day she died in the hopes of getting together with Yukiatsu. Tsuruko had been in love with Yukiatsu since they were kids. Poppo had seen what happened to Menma that day and he felt guilty about it.

Menma’s Last Time With The Super Peace Busters

In The flower blooming that summer, One by one each of them revealed their deep-rooted sorrow about Menma’s death. Everyone’s bottled-up feelings came out and they all broke down into tears. After everyone cries, Jintan tells everyone about Menma’s dream to talk to everyone. So they make a plan to bring Menma back to the base. However, as Menma’s last wish had already been granted she started to disappear.

Jintan’s mother already knew she was about to die but she was worried about Jintan. She was concerned that Jintan was bottling up his emotions. Menma made a promise to Jintan’s mother to teach him how to express himself. So Jintan carries Menma to the secret base but sadly loses the ability to see her.

Everyone gets stressed as they cannot see Menma anymore so to ease the pain in their hearts, Menma calls this a game of ‘hide and seek’. Jintan could hear her.

As the group tries to find her, Menma writes down her final messages for each one of them. After reading the messages, they are all in tears. Knowing they will never see Menma again, they say their final goodbyes. Driven by emotions they all start shouting and calling out for Menma. They thought that if somewhere Menma is able to hear them they want to say their final messages to her as loud as possible in a way to ease their own pain.

As they are shouting “Menma” she replies back with “You found me”. Finally, they were able to hear her voice. The feeling of relief they felt within themselves was very satisfying. As they were able to see and hear her, they made sure that they gave her their honest final goodbyes.

Did Menma Get A Happy Goodbye?

The goodbye she actually deserved and the goodbye she didn’t get earlier. Even Poppo said that “Farewells aren’t one-sided”. He was right. They all made sure to tell Menma how much she meant to them and how much they loved her.

Later, Jintan was not a loner anymore. He started going to school again. He was friends with Anaru, Yukiatsu, Tsuruko, and Poppo again. Yukiatsu and Tsuruko got closer. Poppo continued his part-time job alongside his studies.

The impact we have on others doesn’t fade away, even after we die. Every one of them was facing their grief in their own way. How Jintan became a quiet and lonely kid from a cheerful one. How Anaru grew up with a guarded heart. Menma’s ghost became the flower blooming that summer.
