There are two questions in the anime world that transcend all genres and time, “Who can beat Goku” and “Who ends up with whom”. While we can not provide an answer for the former without starting a riot, we can surely take a look at some of the most celebrated anime couples of all time.
Not all the pairs in the list end up together but since all is fair in love and romance, we are also including some anime couples that the fans wish were canon and some that are heavily implied by the creators to harbour romantic feelings for each other.
Bulma and Vegeta (Dragon Ball Series)
Starting out with a power couple, Bulma and Vegeta are one of the most popular anime couples out there. The hot-headed prince of Saiyans truly found his match in the intelligent, ambitious and feisty Bulma in the Dragon Ball Series. Their cute couple moments are some of the best scenes of the recent Dragon Ball Super.
Goku and Chi-Chi (Dragon Ball Series)
Goku and Chi-Chi are probably the most recognisable couple in the anime world. While fans aren’t too fond of Chi-Chi’s bickering and displays of “affection” towards Goku, it only makes sense considering Goku made Chi-Chi wait for years after he promised to marry her. Moreover, he is often absent in the relationship and kind of has muscles for brains so it’s only natural. Whatever the case, Goku and Chi-Chi are adorable pair who are meant for each other, that is up for no debates.
Krillin and Android 18 (Dragon Ball Series)
Even for the enemies to lovers trope, Krillin and Android 18 are what we call, an odd couple. While they met under difficult circumstances, Krillin seemed to be captivated by the beautiful Android 18 in an instant. Sweet and somewhat subdued Krillin perfectly complements the headstrong and ferocious Android 18.
Sakura and Sasuke (Naruto; Naruto Shippuden)
This kind of love is probably not something one would go for in real life but is surely a one of a kind story. While the road to this relationship may have been a long and painfully scarce one, Sakura and Sasuke were truly made for each other. Throughout the runtime of the show, Sakura longed for Sasuke as Sasuke longed for revenge often taking the wrong path. However, all is well that ends well and while fans might have contentious opinions on these characters, we are all happy to see the two of them become a wholesome family.
Naruto and Hinata (Naruto; Naruto Shippuden)
Naruto and Hinata make for the purest and sweetest couple. Any story of childhood love coming to fruition is always a beautiful one. Hinata has always been very supportive of Naruto while secretly harbouring intense feelings for him. While it took a little time for our hero to catch up, he deeply cherishes Hinata. The two make a lovely couple and an adorable family. They are surely a part of the top 5 anime couples of all time.
Shikamaru and Temari (Naruto; Naruto Shippuden)
Shikamaru and Temari are probably the most underrated Naruto couple. The two first met each other on a battleground with Shikamaru outsmarting Temari but giving up the fight. Over time they got closer to each other while working together and eventually got married. Any moment the two are on screen is full of cute awkward moments and playful banter and the fans are here for it.
Minato and Kushina (Naruto; Naruto Shippuden)
Two confident, ambitious and unique people coming together in the most beautiful way, this is the story of Minato and Kushina. The feisty and quirky Kushina with calm and dorky Minato makes for the perfect couple. Their married moments are so adorable it is heartwarming. These two badass gave up their lives to protect their village and son, indeed the true definition of a ride or die couple.
Armin and Annie (Attack On Titan)
One of the newest and latest to the world of Anime couples, Armin and Annie form a rare relationship in the Attack On Titan Universe. In a world full of war and sudden, tragic deaths, love has little space to grow to fruition. Armin and Annie are an exception to this rule. Armin visited a crystallized Annie regularly to keep her company and the feelings are very mutual judging by Annie’s reaction to it all after being released.
Mikasa and Eren (Attack On Titan)
If there are any two people that truly fit the words “meant for each other”, it would be these two. However, fate got in their way and this tragic love story doesn’t really end well. Even so, fans can not help but find themselves wishing for an alternate universe where Eren and Mikasa find happiness together, away from the war, away from everyone.
Victor and Yuuri (Yuri On Ice)
Yuri on Ice has been praised for its depiction of a beautiful love story between two men, Victor and Yuri. While Yuri starts out as a fan of Victor, their attraction blossoms into a one of a kind love. The two complement each other very well and have grown as people in the presence of each other. Their relationship is one of the most realistic depictions of LGBTQ+ relationships and best anime couples that does not feel forced in any way.
Kurisu and Okabe (Steins;Gate)
Kurisu and Okabe may have been brought together by the love of science but they stayed together for a mutual love of Dr Pepper. Jokes apart, the two tsunderes are perfect for each other. With a love that transcends space and time, literally, Kurisu and Okabe can go to any lengths for each other.
Satomi and Shinichi (Parasyte)
Satomi and Shinichi are a more realistic depiction of love and relationships, well as realistic as they can get in a world of sentient alien parasites. As Shinichi undergoes dramatic changes with everything that goes on with and around him, Satomi has a hard time accepting it all. However, the two reconcile and eventually end up together, having withstood the highs and lows of a slowly growing yet never wavering love.
Erza and Jellal (Fairy Tail)
Jellal and Erza were childhood friends. When they were enslaved at the Tower of Heaven, they quickly formed a strong bond, with Erza adopting the surname 'Scarlet' at Jellal's suggestion. The two are extremely protective of each other. However, it may be a long time before we see the two confess their true feelings to each other. Whatever be the case, for the fans of Fairy Tail, Erza and Jellal are one of the best anime couples out there.
Gray and Juvia (Fairy Tail)
Adding another enemies-to-lovers to the list, Juvia fell in love with Gray at first sight. Gray may be unconcerned about the Water Mage's advances, but we all know he cares deeply for her. Gray's love for Juvia has been confirmed in the sequel to 100 Years Quest. We might get some great Gruvia moments when it gets adapted on screen.
Natsu and Lucy (Fairy Tail)
This is probably one of the most frustrating on-screen canon non-canon pairings of all time. Natsu and Lucy have and would do literally anything for each other except for confessing to their feelings for each other. However, some love stories are beautiful without the 3 magical words ever being said. NaLu is a story of a friendship full of love and a love story full of friendship.
Miyamura and Hori (Horimiya)
Kyouko Hori is a popular, beautiful and sincere student. Miyamura on the other hand is a meek loner who mostly keeps to himself. Despite having opposing personalities, the two quickly become friends and frequently spend time together in Hori's home. As they both emerge from their shells, they share a side of themselves that is hidden from the outside world. Surely, this anime couple is the one to watch for.
Kaguya and Miyuki (Kaguya Sama Love is War)
Kaguya and Miyuki are members of Shuichi'in Academy's extremely prestigious student council. They are regarded as geniuses among geniuses. All of their time together has led them to develop feelings for each other, but their pride prevents them from being the first one to admit it. The two have an adorable but intense dynamic, and the fans are loving it.
Yato and Iki Hiyori (Noragami)
A literally lost soul and a forgotten God, Hiyori and Yato have a unique relationship. While their paths cross due to their needs from each other, the two genuinely start developing feelings for each other. Both of them are quirky in their own ways and would do anything for one another.
Akane and Kogami (Psycho Pass)
Okay, they are not technically a couple but the world of anime-shipping rests on hints and possibilities. Moments between the two are few and far in-between but enough for us to know that Akane and Kogami deeply respect and care for each other.
In the absence of Kogami, Akane would smoke his signature cigarettes to feel his presence. At the end of Psycho Pass first inspector, Kogami picks Akane up when she is released from imprisonment and the two go for lunch. If these aren’t indications of some sort of romantic tension, we do not know what is.
Yayoi and Shion (Psycho Pass)
This Psycho-Pass couple is more than wishful thinking. They are frequently spotted together and are well acquainted. Yayoi often feels insecure because Shion is bisexual and frequently flirts with Kogami. After Yayoi leaves the Bureau, she and Shion are out of touch for a really long time. However, they willingly start spending time together after their reunion during Bifrost investigations. The two love each other very much and at the end of Psycho-Pass: First Inspector, they start living together.
Kirito and Asuna (Sword Art Online)
Kirito and Asuna may not have started on the best of terms but slowly and surely fell deeply in love. The two bring out the best in each other and help each other with personal struggles. Asuna and Kirito have a strong, serious, and committed relationship. They have often expressed their desire to be together forever and their willingness to go to any length to be with each other. One of the best anime couple out there.
Izuku and Ochako (My Hero Academia)
Deku and Uraraka might not be in a canon relationship...yet, however, the two make for the cutest presence on screen. Izuku will go to any lengths to keep Ochako safe. Meanwhile, Uraraka is always there for him through all of his difficulties, especially when his quirk causes him problems. This anime couple is mutually supportive and has beautiful friendship while secretly crushing on each other.
Mitsuha and Tachibana (Kimi No Nawa)
Kimi No Nawa is one of the sweetest, fantastical love story told in the last decade. Mitsuha and Tachibana share a connection that transcends space, time and even physical bodies. The kindered spirits know each other intimately without actually having met once. Love between this anime couple is as pure as it is soulfully beautiful. They make for one of the best anime couples in anime history.
Chihiro and Haku (Spirited Away)
This pair of people is not really a romantic couple in the sense of the word. However, love can manifest itself in many ways and this childhood love that blossomed between a young Chihiro and a timeless spirit, Haku is deserving of acknowledgement. This anime couple helped each other survive in a supernatural world and deeply cared for each other through the thick of it.
Kaneki and Touka (Tokyo Ghoul)
Kaneki and Touka have a neutral relationship at the beginning of Tokyo Ghoul. However, she is the one who helps Kaneki out in adapting to the ghoul life. The two went through a lot of difficult time, Kaneki even losing his memories at one point. Despite all the hardships, they were eventually reunited and got married.
Red Blood Cell and White Blood Cell(Cells At Work)
The protagonists of Cells at Work are AE3803, a ditsy red blood cell who is new to her job, and U-1146, a ruthless white blood cell who is a part of the immune system. As a red blood cell, AE3803 transports oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. U-1146, on the other hand, patrols the blood vessels and destroys threats. While their pairing might not be canon, the two often cross paths and have the sweetest interactions bordering on romance.
Elizabeth and Meliodas (7 Deadly Sins)
A goddess and a demon king, one cursed to be reincarnated over and over again, the other cursed to live forever. The kind and giving Elizabeth is a perfect match for the fierce and passionate Meliodas.
Yuuko and Teiichi (Tasogare Otome x Amnesia)
When Teiichi becomes disoriented in one of the school's old buildings, he meets Yuuko Kanoe, who reveals herself to be a ghost with no memories. Teiichi then decides to look into her death. In their quest to discover the truth, the two become closer. Their paranormal love story is not ordinary by a long stretch and has a bittersweet ending.
Haru and Shizuku (My Little Monster)
Shizuku is known for being a cold, emotionless young lady. Haru, on the other hand, is a vicious and uncontrollable monster. When Shizuku assists Haru on an occasion, he immediately declares his love for Shizuku. However, it takes Shizuku much longer to recognise and accept her own feelings for Haru. The previously asocial beings come together to teach each other how to care for one another and navigate the world around them.
Maka and Evans (Soul Eater)
Maka and Evans are as close as we can get to a canon relationship in the anime Soul Eater. While not officially an anime couple, the two have often shared moments that indicate they might just be more than friends. Between the squabbles and the banter, the two fit together like pieces of jigsaw who work in perfect sync.
Tanaka and Kiyoko (Haikyuu)
Haikyuu being a primarily sports shonen doesn’t have many romance elements to it. Tanaka’s crush on Kiyoko is mostly played for gags throughout the series. However, the end of the manga reveals that the two actually end up getting married! The earnest and headstrong Tanaka and the quiet, resilient Kiyoko actually suit each other perfectly and just make sense as an anime couple.
Edward and Winry (FMA: Brotherhood)
Show us a cuter anime couple in action shonen, we’ll wait. Winry is Edward's personal automail engineer and mechanic, responsible for keeping his prosthetic right arm and left leg in good condition. The two have an awkward cute dynamic and really support and care for each other. Edward’s alchemy styled, awkward proposal at the end of the show should go down as the greatest proposals of all time in the history of shonen anime.
Celty and Shinra (Durarara!!)
Celty and Shinra first met in their childhood. They became roommates and Shinra developed feelings for Celty. Eventually, she reciprocates these feelings as well. Celty's nerves are calmed by Shinra's presence and rambling words, and she enjoys cooking for him and buying him gifts. It's implied later in the series that the anime couple were engaged.
Ryuuji and Taiga (Toradora)
An adorable will they won’t they love story, Toradora explores the blossoming love between the temperamental Taiga and kind but fearsome looking Ryuuji. Amidst a series of misunderstandings and denials, the two develop feelings for each other and overcome their own personal struggles.
Kamina and Yoko (Gurren Lagann)
When Yoko and Kamina first met, Kamina wasted no time in hitting on her, believing she was a surface dweller. Their opposing personalities frequently result in bickering and banter. Because of both characters' unyielding personalities, their relationship is extremely volatile, but it is also full of trust, care, partnership and mutual romantic love.
Simon and Nia (Gurren Lagann)
Nia is an artificial being and she meets Simon for the first time after a major character's death. Despite the strange circumstances under which the two met, they deeply love each other. Simon goes to great lengths to turn Nia into a human and the two get married before Nia fades away.
Kousei and Kaori (Your Lie in April)
Kaori began playing the violin in the hopes of one day performing with Kousei. Throughout their time together, there were numerous instances in which Kousei gradually developed feelings for Kaori. A massive misunderstanding prevents anything happening between the two. However, Kousei's feelings are very much reciprocated, as we learn at the end of the story in the most heartbreaking way.
Ichigo and Orihime (Bleach)
Ichigo and Orihime are now officially canon, which both disappointed and delighted long-time fans of the series. Orihime had a crush on Ichigo since elementary school. As the series progressed, their relationship grew and they both became aware of their feelings. Both are willing to go to any length to protect their love and have done so several times in and out of battle.
Tohru and Kyo (Fruits Basket)
Tohru is limitlessly selfless and kind while Kyo is a sensitive soul with somewhat of a temper. Kyo and Yuki both fall for Tohru, leading to increasing animosity between them. However, Tohru eventually ends up in a mutually loving relationship with Kyo. The two care deeply for each other and help each other grow in many ways.
Shigure and Akito (Fruit Basket)
This one is probably not a relationship any of us should look up to. Shigure and Akito have a very toxic and codependent relationship in the beginning of the story. The two are cunning and ready to sacrifice anyone to mee their ends. However, as the story progresses, we come to learn of Akito’s traumatizing past and the reason for Shigure’s obsessive dedication towards her. Eventually and thankfully, the two enter a mutually romantic and healthy relationship.
Misaki and Takumi (Maid Sama)
Misaki distrusts boys and men in general as a result of her absentee father. Takumi, on the other hand, appears to be about to change all of that. He continues to demonstrate that she can rely on him. Their bond is as endearing as it is subtle, and the tension between them is a joy to watch. In the manga, the two eventually marry and have two children.
Yuno and Charmy (Black Clover)
Okay, we’ll admit we’re just trying to wish this one into existence. Yuno and Charmy may not make much sense on paper. However, Charmy crushes hard on Yuno. She regards him as her prince and tries to feed him something in each of their interactions. Likewise, Yuno is always sweet and nice to Charmy while he barely interacts with anyone else. The relationship between the two is based on mutual kindness and would make for the most adorable pairing.
Yami and Charlotte (Black Clover)
Yami is a down to Earth, direct man who is really dense when it comes to matters of love. Charlotte on the other hand is a proud capable woman with an all-women squad under her. Ever since Yami saved her from her curse, Charlotte has been in love with him. However, she will probably never admit it to his face and Yami will probably never get the hint. Either way, the two make for some of the cutest and funniest moments when they are together.
Yuzuru and Kanade (Angel Beats)
Even in the sometimes bizarre world of anime, we don’t often see love stories that begin with one stabbing the other. What begins with a misunderstanding however, develops into a pure and undying love. The anime has a sort of bittersweet ending for the two but true love is all about the journey and not the destination.
Yuzuriha and Taiju (Dr. Stone)
Taiju had loved Yuzuriha for a long time but could never confess it. During the thousand-year petrification, his longing for Yuzuriha kept him sane. After depetrification, Yuzuriha reciprocated his feelings. Both Yuzuriha and Taiju are compassionate and resilient people. The two make for the cutest and healthiest couple on screen.
Atsushi and Kyoka (Bungo Stray Dogs)
Bungo Stray Dogs does not have much space for romance in its runtime. However, Atsushi and Kyoka are the closest we get to a canon couple. The two young people are kindred spirits. Both come from a deeply traumatic past and find themselves in the process of trying to help one another. Their story is just a sweet coming of age story and young innocent love.
Nezuko and Zenitsu (Demon Slayer)
Despite his intense fear of Demons, Zenitsu falls in love at first sight on encountering Nezuko. He tries several times to persuade her to marry him and never fails to express his admiration for her whenever he sees her, somewhat creepily and aggressively. However, down the lane the two develop a friendship based on mutual respect for each other. The two would eventually marry by the end of the series.
Tanjiro and Kanao (Demon Slayer)
Kanao is pretty straight-faced and displays little to no emotion when we first see her. It is Tanjiro who encourages her to open her heart and embrace her true feelings. Their fondness for each other grows from then on. Eventually, the two marry and have kids by the end of the story.
Natsuki and Emilia (Re: Zero)
Natsuki was smitten with Emilia at first sight. He dedicated himself to protecting her no matter what happened to him, even if it meant dying over and over again. Emilia gradually developed feelings for him as well. Natsuki's personal development is a result of their relationship. He was later appointed as her knight, symbolizing the strong bond of trust and love the two have developed.
Yukako and Koichi (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure)
Yukako falls for the short and timid-at-first Koichi, and comes across as a crazy obsessive stalker at first. However, she is a strong worthy opponent and Stand user. Yukako fades into obscurity after her defeat, until she comes under the influence of a stand user who claims to make her beautiful. Koichi realizes he has feelings for her and the two begin dating. Their love story might not be a conventional one, but the two make it work.
Lelouch and C.C. (Code Geass)
Lelouch is a powerful prince who uses the power of Geass to lead Japan in a revolutionary movement against those in power who oppress the helpless. C.C. is an immortal being who bestows this power on him. The two share a connection throughout the series. Their moments of romantic tension provide much-needed relief in an otherwise serious anime.
Yuta and Rikka (Love, Chuunibyou, and Other Delusions)
Yuta has fantastical delusions but is ashamed of his past. He begins high school with an open mind, starting over. However, he soon encounters a girl who is suffering from delusions of her own. This is the beginning of their love story. Although the "delusions" appear to be ridiculous, they actually bring the characters closer together. Yuta and Rikka bond over their shared weirdness and embark on a journey of self-discovery.
Risa and Atsushi (Lovely Complex)
Lovely Complex showed a sweet and simple love blossom between its two leads in a way that was unique for its time. Risa is a tall girl while Atsushi is a short guy. Their peculiar defiance of the usual norms brings them together. Both of them are very kind and have the cutest moments together.
Hitagi and Koyomi (Bakemonogatari)
Theirs is a love story that began with Hitagi shoving a stapler into Koyomi’s mouth! Hitagi is a physically frail and emotionally volatile girl. On the other hand, Koyomi for the most part is selfless and sweet. The two are perfect for each other, helping each other grow and overcome their issues.
Zero Two and Hiro (Darling in the FranXX)
Hiro and Zero Two were partners. Over time, Zero Two began to develop romantic feelings for Hiro. However, her determination to become fully human, combined with Hiro's obvious fear of her growing feral characteristics, caused the couple to drift apart. When their relationship began to deteriorate, they rediscovered long-forgotten memories of their childhood meeting, rekindling their love.
And that is the end of our list of the 55 best anime couples. Let us know in the comments if we missed your favourite anime couple.
